There are many ways that students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members can be spartan green. We invite you to make a personal commitment to sustainability by considering the environmental, social and economic impact of your daily decisions and commit to new ways of leading a sustainable life while on campus and at home.

Energy and Water
Energy and Water Tips
- Remember, the greenest energy is the energy we don't use in the first place, so remember to turn off lights and unplug electronic devices.
- Plug electronics into a power strip and switch off the power when they are not in use; some electronics continue to draw energy even after they're turned off.
- Washing your clothes in hot water can account for up to 90% of the energy used by a washing machine - try washing your clothes in cold water and reduce your carbon footprint.
- Reduce your water use by picking a "power shower" song. Challenge yourself and see if you can you shower in the amount of time it takes to play your favorite song.
- Make every load count and washing only full loads of laundry or dishes. Not only does it help save on water and energy, it's also more cost-effective.

Waste Reduction and Zero Waste Principles
Waste Reduction Tips
- Remember, the first "R" is to Reduce! Your daily choices like purchasing gently used items, using reusable dishware and avoiding single-use items will help prevent waste in the first place.
- Create a waste and recycling station within your room or office. Save two boxes: use one for plastic and metal and one for mixed paper. Use a small trash can - you will think twice about what can be thrown away when the landfill bin holds less material.
