Hanover Forest Online Seminar Series: Hillary Pine, Michigan's Forest History

October 3, 3:30 - 4:30 pm @ Natural Resources Rm 225 / Zoom

In the 1830s, it was estimated that Michigan had enough pine to cut for hundreds of years. Just 80 years later, the state was almost entirely clearcut. By the 1930s, clearcutting, wildfires, and a depression had wreaked havoc on the state’s people and land. Learn how Michigan’s forests fell, about groundbreaking experimentation at Michigan’s first nursery, and how the monumental work of the Civilian Conservation Corps transformed a broken land and economy.

Hanover Forest Online Seminar Series: Scott Stark, The Importance of Amazon Forest-Climate Feedback for Earth's Future

October 10, 3:30 - 4:30 pm @ Natural Resources Rm 225 / Zoom

The Amazon forest plays a vital role in cooling the Earth’s atmosphere. Droughts caused by climate change are contributing to Amazon forest degradation, however, threatening this role and the region’s rich biological and cultural diversity. I’ll share my research on the Amazon forest’s resilience (or sensitivity) to these pressures: My lab has investigated canopies’ climate responses and impacts at multiple scales, sometimes measuring leaves 100+ feet above the ground, often employing innovative remote sensing approaches. I’ll conclude outlining next
steps for integrated interdisciplinary forest-atmosphere research and education, advancing MSU leadership in evidence-based tropical forest management against climate change.
