The Office of Sustainability and our partners have an action-packed month ahead with plenty of opportunities to Be Spartan Green! Join us throughout April to celebrate our wonderful earth and raise awareness of the value of sustainability at MSU.

Earth Month Giveaway
MSU students, staff and faculty: Participate in Earth Month activities for a chance to win a sustainable prize! Keep an eye out for code words, which will serve as one entry for a chance to win a prize, including items from Bailey Greenhouse and Urban Farm, Surplus Store and Recycling Center, and the MSU Dairy Store.
Code words will be posted at select events as well as on the MSU Sustainability social media channels. Collect code words and submit them individually using this form for multiple entries.
Submit your code words by 11:59 pm on April 25. Winners will be notified on April 26.

April 1 – 30 The MSU Science Festival, celebrated annually throughout the month of April, is a free annual celebration of science, fueled by some of the basic elements essential to scientific inquiry: curiosity, wonder, and discovery. The 11th annual science festival returns in person this year with over 200 events for the whole family to enjoy. From astronomy to music, and chemistry to microbiology; scientists and educators across the state are eager to share the wonder of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. |

Edible ice cream aquifers: What can you learn about groundwater? April 2, 2:00-2:30 pm and 3:00-3:30 PM @ STEM Building Workshop Stage Make your own edible ice cream aquifer! Learn about aquifers and groundwater and how you can protect water resources. Find out how groundwater in the aquifer can become contaminated by watching what happens when you start adding chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and soda to your ice cream aquifer. This event is offered by the Office of Sustainability and Institute of Water Research as part of the MSU Science Festival. |

First Friday: Neon Fashion Night April 7, 7-9 pm @ MSU Museum The MSU Museum, MSU SciComm, and Spartan Upcycle of the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center are hosting a science and art neon fashion show representing the intersectionality of sustainability and fashion. Dress up in neon clothing, learn about the element neon, and celebrate science and art coming to life through fashion on the runway while listing to Impact 89FM DJs. Relax during intermission with a science poetry slam about neon and have fun with neon-themed activities with your friends. Tickets are free but space is limited. |

MSU Solar Race Team Demonstration Day April 15, 12-4 pm @ STEM Building The MSU Solar Car Racing Team will be presenting and showcasing all the sub-projects that will make up the Solar Car. |

April 18, 2 – 5 pm @ Makerspace in the MSU Library (2-West) Patch those holes in your favorite clothes! Repair your ripped jeans and replace those shirt buttons! Come as a beginner, a seasoned expert, or anywhere in between! Gain or give hands-on help in the Makerspace with your item. We have a variety of equipment and supplies. Bring clothing you need to repair, or come to learn techniques. Mending is a fun way to save money and the environment. Registration is encouraged. |

Sustainability & RSO Resource Fair April 20, 5:30-8 pm @ STEM Building, Rm 1001 Celebrate Earth Week and meet with student clubs focused around sustainability. Enjoy light refreshments and pick up some Earth Week gear. Hosted by ASMSU and UAB. |

RISE Earth Day Cleanup and Celebration April 21, 10 – 3 pm @ Bailey Greenhouse and Urban Farm Join RISE for a day of fun and stewardship in honor of Earth Day. Help with spring maintenance at the Bailey Urban Farm and Greenhouse, clean up a stretch of the Red Cedar River, get your bike tuned up, seed wildflowers on the Bailey greenroof, help with beehive maintenance, or attend a vermicomposting worm bin workshop. |

April 22, 12-4 pm @ Surplus Store and Recycling Center Celebrate Earth Day! Join in a freecycle swap, make upcycled crafts, tour the recycling and vermicompost facilities, and more. Hosted as part of the MSU Science Festival, in collaboration with MSU Office of Sustainability and MSU Libraries’ Hollander Makerspace. |

April 22, 3pm to Night @ MSU Bikes Service Center Celebrate biking with fun and engaging activities all day! Stop by the grassy area outside MSU Bikes Service Center for demo rides on a wide range of bikes, bike riding skills learning sessions for riders of all ages; go-slow races (last person to put a foot down wins!), and a challenging obstacle course and bike commuter challenge. There will be a guided bike tour around campus around noon. After dark, attend a 90 min. bike movie fest curated by Filmed by Bike (out of Portland, OR) and close out the evening with a bike light parade around campus and near campus! |

Earth Day - Spartan Day of Service April 22, 9 – 2 pm The Earth Day Spartan Day of Service is a free event for all students and includes a morning kick off-event at the Business College Complex, bus transportation to all volunteer sites, breakfast, a boxed lunch, and a Spartan Days of Service t-shirt. Volunteer sites for this Day of Service include Edgewood Village Housing Nonprofit, REACH Art Studio, Fenner Nature Center, Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary School of Flint, Haven House, and more. The ASMSU, Beal Botanical Garden, Infrastructure Planning and Faciliites, and the Office of Sustainability are teaming up for the Spartan Day of Service for spring maintenance at MSU pollinator gardens.

Alternative Spartan Breaks Weekend Service Experience April 22-23 Breakers will participate in a weekend service experience working at a national lakeshore that aims to preserve natural resources in the area along with their lighthouses, barns, farm houses, outbuildings, shops, and more. You will have the chance to perform a variety of tasks under the areas of dune ecology, their port Oneida historic farm district, natural resources, and beach environment. Activities may include maintaining trails, monitoring endangered species, helping at the campground, beach cleanup, and more! Help ensure that these public areas are available for all to experience and enjoy. MSU students must apply to participate. |

Global Voices Sustainable Fashion Roundtable: Towards A More Sustainable Future for Fashion April 25, 1 – 2 pm via Zoom Global Voices showcases how the work of young global innovators, MSU faculty, and international industry leaders contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The panel will share their reflections on changing the path of fashion, reducing its negative environmental and social impacts, and turning fashion into a driver for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Insights and experiences will be shared on various sustainability topics, including circularity, ethical production, and the role of technology in sustainability. Hosted by MSU’s Global Youth Advancement Network in partnership with MSU’s Canadian Studies Center. |
