Eco-Artivism: Weaving with Plastic Against Plastic

Plastic is a ubiquitous part of our daily lives with far-reaching environmental ramifications. How can we not only re-use plastic, but re-think our relationships to plastic? What role does creativity and art play in this? In this artivism (art +activism) workshop, participants will address these questions and collaboratively create a giant weaving made from plastic and recycled objects on a wooden tapestry loom. The workshop will begin with a brief demonstration of weaving techniques, followed by ‘plarning,’ which involves cutting plastic bags and other recycled materials into long strips of yarn. Participants are encouraged to bring their own found objects to contribute to the weaving.

This program is in conjunction with the exhibition 1.5° Celsius which explores the global climate crisis on view in the MSU Museum’s Main Gallery September 6, 2022 – February 25, 2023.
