Michigan Circular Economy Forum

Fri, May 29, 2020 8:30 AM - Fri, May 29, 2020 12:00 PM at Zoom

The circular economy and extended producer responsibility (EPR) are key components in helping realize the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular, SDG 12: Responsible Consumpution and Production.

The MSU Center for Community and Economic Development (CCED) hosted the Michigan Circular Economy Forum to explore opportunities related to the circular economy and EPR in Michigan. The forum capped off a multiphased approach to engage stakeholders from industry, academia and the public-policy sectors to identify and prioritize short- and long-term challenges and opportunities to advance a circular economy in the state. This process resulted in the development of a white paper that identifies priority actions for supporting the circular economy in Michigan.

MSU continues to facilitate and engage in national dialogue around the circular economy. For example, a case study of this process was presented at the 2020 Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education. The CCED has also made the circular economy a pillar of its Comprehensive Economic Recovery Initiative and currently has an ongoing project examining waste reduction in rural and small communities.
