Sustainable Packing List

Get a head start toward your Spartan Green Living Certification! Use the packing list and tips to move in sustainably.

Pack smart. Save money. Waste less.

Pack Smart.

  • Do I need it?
  • How often will I actually use this?
  • How durable is it?
  • Will I still want this when I move out?
  • How will I dispose of it when I no longer want it?

Save Money.

  • Can I bring it from home?
  • Can I share it with my roommate?
  • Can I buy this used?
  • Can I wait to buy this item until after move in?

Unpack, Pitch In.

At move-in, recycle cardboard and Styrofoam packaging in designated collection areas.

  • Flatten cardboard boxes. Remove all other packaging material from the box.
  • Separate Styrofoam. Rigid pieces that snap are recyclable; bendable foam goes in the landfill.
  • Take cardboard and Styrofoam to outdoor collection stations.

Quick Tips:

  • Coordinate with your roommate avoid duplicate items.
  • Once you're settled in, check with you Resident Assistant (RA) to locate your building's recycling station.
  • Buy used items whenever possible. This will save you money and decrease your carbon footprint. Check local thrift stores, the MSU Surplus Store, or Freecycle for gently used furnishings available in the area.
  • If purchasing new, buy items with recycled content and/or that are local or fair trade.
  • Pack with reusable containers such as laundry baskets and plastic bins.
  • If you must use cardboard boxes, you may be able to pick some up for free at a local store. You can turn your used boxes into a recycling station for your room. Save two boxes and use one for plastic and metal and one for mixed paper.
