Sustainability Surveys

MSU Student Sustainability Survey

MSU has conducted an annual sustainability survey for undergraduate students since 2013 through a partnership between the Office of Sustainability and faculty member, Dr. Adam Zwickle, within the Department of Community Sustainability. This survey work supports university STARS reporting, informs the development and improvement of sustainability initiatives on campus, and supports graduate student research.

MSU Employee Sustainability Survey

The MSU Sustainability Employee Survey was used to understand employee perceptions about sustainability at MSU, their familiarity with campus sustainability programs, and the extent to which they engage in sustainable behaviors. Completed in 2024, this is the first time an employee-focused survey has been conducted since the Office of Sustainability was reorganized under the Office of the Executive Vice President for Administration in 2018. These results established new baseline information for employees. Overall results indicated that a majority of employees engaged in at least one type of sustainable behavior, with turning off the lights, recycling and using reusable beverage containers as the most common behaviors. Respondents were least likely to engage in unplugging chargers when not in use, with roughly 25% reporting never doing this. The survey also found Support Staff were more likely to be aware of sustainability programs and resources compared to employees from the Faculty/Academic Staff and Skilled Trades employee groups.
